Colours of the Mountains

Cynefin is a collection of textiles, inspired by four Welsh mountain ranges. Four colour stories; Preseli, Cambrian, Eryri and Brecheiniog, capture the spirit of the mountains. The heart of the weave, the warp, is woven in bold stripes of green and grey. These stripes are a connecting thread through each piece, representing the heart of the country. Each design has its own colour combination in the weft, reflecting each individual place.

Born from a sense of longing and isolation from my homeland during the pandemic, this collection of textiles provides a connection with the wild, Welsh landscape.

A landscape picture of Welsh mountains. Taken from the road, in the foreground is a fence with the landscape and mountains stretching out behind it. The colours of the image are mainly copper browns and muted grey greens. The sky is overcast.
A green and Orange check woollen fabric is folded in half. Laid on top of the fabric is a watercolour painting of mountains in deep green and copper brown. There is also weaving pirns with yellow and green wool yarn wound on them.
Four yarn wrap, she different combinations of greens, yellow, orange, blue and grey. They are used as a design tool to work out the preparations of colour in a woven fabric. They lie on a white background.

Hand woven in British Wool.
